- LipSeal Tape is a tape applied to the lips to suppress mouth breathing during sleep and promote nasal breathing.
- When we tried it, morning stickiness and bad breath improved, and subjective sleep quality increased.
- Sleep app data showed a roughly 10% increase in sleep quality, and snoring time decreased but did not completely disappear.
- If nasal congestion or sleep apnea is suspected, we recommend consulting an ENT specialist or sleep specialist first.
- Combining with daytime nasal breathing training and nasal cavity care can accelerate habit formation.
Introduction: Can "Mouth Taping" Really Make a Difference When You Sleep? We Tried It.
You've probably heard about whether nasal breathing or mouth breathing is better, but we didn't pay much attention to it either. When nasal passages become easily blocked due to hay fever or aging, or when the muscles around the mouth weaken, leading to an open mouth, mouth breathing can occur unconsciously. This time, we used "LipSeal Tape," a product designed to correct mouth breathing during sleep, to verify if there were any changes in sleep quality and oral discomfort.
What is LipSeal Tape? Mechanism and Features
LipSeal Tape is a non-woven tape made with a thin, silicone-based, hypoallergenic adhesive, marketed as latex-free and gentle on the skin. Its simple mechanism involves applying it over the lips to keep the mouth closed during sleep, thereby promoting nasal breathing. The manufacturer recommends continuous use for 3 to 6 months for habit formation, intending it purely as a "support tool."
Effects of Mouth Breathing on the Body and Benefits of Nasal Breathing
Mouth breathing is said to cause dry mouth, reducing the antibacterial and self-cleaning action of saliva, thereby increasing the risk of bad breath and periodontal disease. Indeed, reviews in journals like BMJ and long-term observational reports in Japanese dentistry suggest a link between mouth breathing and gingivitis and oral dryness. Conversely, nasal breathing warms and humidifies the air in the nasal cavity, reducing the burden on the airways and is thought to lead to improved sleep quality.
Our Experience: Results from Comparing with Sleep Cycle
Subjective Experience
The first time, I felt nervous about the tape on my mouth, but I quickly got used to it once it fit my lips, and I was able to fall into a deep sleep. After waking up, the usual stickiness and unpleasantness of bad breath were gone, and I felt a reduction in head heaviness and sluggishness. Honestly, I was surprised by the morning freshness.
Objective Data from the App
Comparing with and without wearing the tape using a sleep analysis app (Sleep Cycle), the average sleep quality when worn increased by approximately 10%, reaching around 70%. The total snoring time clearly decreased, but it did not completely disappear, with some remaining. Snoring is also related to posture, obesity, and factors other than the nasal cavity, so it cannot be definitively attributed solely to mouth breathing.
Tips and Precautions for Use
Usage is simple, but there are key points for safe and effective results.
- Apply just before bedtime: If you repeatedly peel it off and reapply, the adhesive strength will decrease, so it's best to apply it once just before going to sleep.
- Combine with nasal congestion measures: If you have a stuffy nose, it can be dangerous, so please use it after performing nasal irrigation, nasal sprays, or allergy countermeasures.
- Avoid use in children, elderly individuals with dementia, or those with respiratory illnesses, and consult a doctor.
- If you feel breathless or anxious during use, remove it immediately. If sleep apnea is suspected, a specialist's diagnosis is required.
- Tips for habit formation: Consciously practice nasal breathing during the day, perform mouth muscle training (face yoga and chewing exercises), and combine with nasal cavity care at an ENT clinic to accelerate effectiveness.
Summary
LipSeal Tape felt like a useful and easy-to-use tool for suppressing mouth breathing during sleep and improving morning oral discomfort and subjective sleep quality. In our tests, sleep quality improved and snoring time decreased, but since snoring and sleep problems are due to complex factors, this product alone may not solve everything. If you have nasal congestion or suspect sleep apnea, please consult an ENT specialist or sleep specialist before safely incorporating it. By combining it with daytime nasal breathing training and lifestyle improvements, you should be able to create better sleep habits. We also want to continue trying it.
